This paper proposes and investigates fast variable block-sizemotion estimation algorithms based on merge and splitprocedures for H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video encoding. Thealgorithms take advantage of the correlation of the MotionVectors (MVs) of the different block-size modes, to achievegood computation reduction. Experimental results show that thenumber of search points can be reduced to about 4% of thatusing full-search motion estimation, with negligible qualitydegradation.
